Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

This is a follow-up of my Bug #460510.

I have attached the file ErrorLogs.tar.gz which contains:
lspci -vvnn
xorg.conf
Xorg.0.log

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: amd64
CheckboxCommand: xrandr_cycle
CheckboxData:
Running the xrandr_cycle test predictable fails. When I run the test the xserver seems to crash and I am back at the Ubuntu login screen.
When loging back in into Ubuntu again and running the test to switch to vt or switch manually to vt (ctrl-alt-f1), I have sometimes seen a scrambled screen with mainly beige color. When having a scrambled screen, leaving it with ctrl-alt-f7 did not work, however surprisingly leaving back to the deskto worked with ctrl-alt-f9. So far I have not found a way to predicably reproduce making the switch to vt fail.
CheckboxDescription:
Click Test to cycle through the detected video modes for your system.

Did the screen appear to be working for each mode?

I have tested all screen resolutions manually using ubuntu's display configuration.

Only the following can be activated successfully:
1680 x 1050 16:10
1280 x 1024 5:4
832 x 624 4:3
640 x 480 4:3

All others either fail with going back to login screen or end up with a new picture with the newly configured resolution, however the screen is not built up completely and no longer updated.

This looks like a good amount of information. Would you be interested
in taking it upstream to the xorg/nouveau component of
bugs.freedesktop.org?

I note that you're not using kernel modesetting - upstream is pretty
much abandoning the usermode modesetting codepath, so it would be useful
to try with KMS enabled. One way that you can do this is to add
"nouveau.modeset=1" to your kernel boot parameters from the grub prompt.

Also, I'll be uploading a new snapshot of nouveau to the xorg-edgers PPA
in the near future, and you could test with that.

As requested I have created a follow-up bug Bug #473409 with kms activated.
Please note that besides the resolutions above, the xrandr_cycle test was fine for all resolutions.
Maybe the failing resolutions have something to do with not configured kms settigs.

Thus for that purpose I'd keep this bug open too.

@Chris Halse Rogers:
If you like me to test your "new snapshot of nouveau to the xorg-edgers PPA", please tell me:
- where to find it
- how to install it
and
- how to get rid of it in case I get trouble

Thanks.

Chris Halse Rogers (raof) wrote :

How to get it:
"""
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/nouveau
sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude safe-upgrade
"""

To remove:
delete /etc/apt/sources.list.d/xorg-edgers-nouveau.list
Check out "apt-cache policy xserver-xorg-video-nouveau" and "apt-cache
policy nouveau-kernel-source", and then install the versions from Karmic
(eg: sudo aptitude install xserver-xorg-video-nouveau=1:0.0.10~git
+20090823+569a17a-0ubuntu1)

Thanks for testing this. We're only going to be shipping the KMS version of nouveau going forward.
