Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Description of the problem:
Playing back a Team Fortress 2 video fullscreen is slow when compiz is enabled even though it is fine when metacity is used.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Download http://cdn2.fileshack.com/secure/video/14334.flv?rs=250&e=1256744653&h=acf691798605c6ea375731bf12bf01c3.flv .
2. Run metacity --replace .
3. Run totem on the downloaded file. Press F to go fullscreen. Quit totem after 60 seconds of the video have played.
4. Run compiz --replace .
5. Run totem on the downloaded file. Press F to go fullscreen.

Expected results:
5. to be a little bit slower than 3. if the CPU/GPU is not at all idle otherwise no noticeable difference.

Actual results:
5. is dramatically slower than 3. even though top says the CPU is 70% idle and intel_gpu_top shows most tasks are at 90% at most.

(I forgot to mention that the problem is reproducible every time and is especially noticeable because compiz is used by default on this machine)

Hi sitsofe,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn` and `dmesg`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log (and maybe Xorg.0.log.old) file from after reproducing this issue. If you're using a custom /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

No custom Xorg.0.log is in use.

That should have been xorg.conf not Xorg.0.log...

This issue was reported against karmic, so can you confirm if this issue exists with the most recent Lucid Lynx 10.04 Alpha release? ISO CD images are available at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/lucid/ . Thanks in advance.

Still here in Lucid Lynx 10.04 Alpha:

compiz 1:0.8.4-0ubuntu13
xorg 1:7.5+1ubuntu8 X.Org X Window System
xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.9.1-1ubuntu6
libdrm-intel1 2.4.18-1ubuntu2

Further, X now seems unstable and can crash suddenly (perhaps AIGLX related). If a severe crash occurs SysRq still works (one crash seemed to lock up the console forcing a reboot). Another crash just restarted X. The new boot up startup screen looks like blue process bars on this EeePC 900 (rather than the Ubuntu logo seen on other machines).

I notice the original link to the video is not working. The video is the one linked used in the flash stream on http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/58667 .

Please don't ask me to test this again until the final release of 10.04 is out.

In this case we can do nothing further for the bug so I will close it out at this time.

Ok. I'll reopen it if it still exists in the final 10.04.

Still here in Ubuntu Oneiric (although the video link no longer works). With unity-2d about 25% CPU is used, with 3d unity 50% CPU is used but performance is degraded even though there is "spare" CPU:

With SNA enabled and non-blocking waits, this is about as good as it will get for the forseeable future.
