Bug Description

this bug is concerning Kubuntu 9.10 RC as well as Ubuntu 9.10 RC (both in the 64-bit Version)

from Ubuntu 9.10 RC Checkbox Report:

P: /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1b.0/sound/card0
E: UDEV_LOG=3
E: DEVPATH=/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1b.0/sound/card0
E: SUBSYSTEM=sound
E: SOUND_INITIALIZED=1
E: ID_VENDOR_FROM_DATABASE=Intel Corporation
E: ID_MODEL_FROM_DATABASE=82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller

no hints found in 'dmesg'; no hints found via 'lspci'

Under Kubuntu 9.10 RC, this sound controller is recognized as 'HDA Intel (ALC 260 Analog)' and doesn't produce any sound. The there available alternative 'PulseAudio' doesn't work, too.

Sound hardware working properly both under (32-bit) Ubuntu 8.04
  AND
Kubuntu 8.04 - HDA Intel as well as PulseAudio

-----------------------------
what is asked to check when encountering sound problems, but didn't help:
  grep "^Codec\|^Vendor Id\|^Subsystem Id\|^Revision Id" /proc/asound/card*/*codec*[...]
grep: /proc/asound/card*/*codec*/*: No such file or directory
perhaps because I use a Live DVD?

  cat /proc/asound/cards

Hi Kein,

Can you run the following which will automatically gather and attach sound related debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p alsa-base 461343

Just discovered: Sound can be put to work properly by altering some of the adjustments in 'alsamixer' [started via konsole]. It looks as if the Problem is related to false or lacking presettings.

Hi kein,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 461343

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Jeremy,

thanks for your information and concern.
This is no issue for me any more.
It turned out that, after upgrade (and some of the following updates)
had to be altered manually each time
 output jack --> headphone
via alsamixer.
Also, the right channel had been set to 'mute' by the upgrade to 9.10.

Kind regards,
Thomas (aka 'kein Trinkwasser')
