Bug Description

After updating my Karmic install with the latest packages as of 10/25, I can no longer log in following reboot.

If I switch to a console using Ctrl+Alt+F1, I can log in and restart gdm with 'sudo service gdm restart'. After this, I can successfully log in.

Examing .xsession-errors indicates "Fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server :0.0" for each one of the graphical programs that should be started as part of session initialization.

$ lsb_release -rd

This could be a dup of bug 454437, because the symptoms are similar. However, there appear to be enough differences in the details that I opened a new bug.

The launchpad thread discusses this problem a bit more: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1301185

Based on another user's suggestion, I deleted my .config directory, logged back in, and reconfigured xfce to get back to where I had been. After server system restarts, I no longer see this problem. Assuming that it is related to some oddity in my previous xfce configuration, I will mark this bug as invalid.

Changed in nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 (Ubuntu):
status: New → Invalid
