Bug Description
Add a background_collor variable to the settings module. Set it to the system default for gtk.DrawingArea (or system default for something like a VBox) but allow user to change via slider (grayscale)/color picker in the config plugin.

i disagree
i like your initial idea to provide a dark background to enhance the way image are rendered (black or dark grey)
on the contrary, what could follow user theme is the frame around selected images
