Bug Description

Binary package hint: grub

did update today and maintenance menu had an update
now the maintenance menu loads garbled and arrow keys
print a message of mountall and prints a machine or maintenance login that does not recognise user or password
This was supposed to have a fix https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/karmic/+source/mountall/+bug/458060 but when update and reboot and then restart maintenance menu is garbled plus the same activity as previous bug

this makes the arrow keys bring a garbled mountall text also if I select boot normal option by pressing enter nothing happens

the system updated again and menu now works with arrow keys but udf firewall message on top of boot normal
and boot normal still does not work even though login can
This may be caused by another issue in splashscreen because I do see a message on regular boot that gives splash message followed by that same login prompt which goes away and brings up x gnome login screen
