It seems that the input volume settings for your microphone devices are turned down. I suggest you go into the volume control preferences and unmute/turn the microphone volume up.

I do it. Also I try all profiles into Volume Control Settings. Monitor of external noise don't show anything. But at LiveCD all work. Screenshot of sound input are attached.

Please dump 'amixer' from the live cd and 'amixer' from your install.

My questions about audio on Skype (see Re: HOWTO: PulseAudio Fixes & System-Wide Equalizer Support) seem very similar to Leo's comments above, and although there are some slight differences in the Terminal output produced by command 'amixer', in general I think my problems are the same as his.
I did not use the Live CD to get Karmic - I did an upgrade, but the end result appears similar.
In order to assist (rather than hinder!) this bug report what should I do? Would my 'amixer' results help at all? Anything else?

RayArdia, I think that pulseaudio or alsa have different settings on LiveCD and right after installation. If it's true, I want to find it.
Possible there is different between initialisation process on LiveCD and on hard disc.
Maybe you should try boot from LiveCD, and look what will be work and what will not?

I can confirm the same problem with my machine running 9.10 Karmic Koala from a fresh install. The microphone worked in version 9.04.

When I boot the computer up from the LiveCD the analog (non-usb) microphone works, and when I boot from the hard drive it does not work.

My volume settings were identical under my "Sound Preferences" when comparing the LiveCD and O/S booted from the hard drive.

I even tried installing the following packages (below) after some users reported that this would work.

linux-backports-modules-alsa-2.6.31-15-generic <= didn't work
linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic <= didn't work
pulseaudio paman pavumeter<= didn't work

I'll try to get some debugs once I get in front of it at the end of this week hopefully

I had the same problem with my laptop Acer Aspire 5100

solution:

cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec

you will see your sound card model, in my case output was

Codec: Realtek ALC883

open file:

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

modify line which starts with

options snd-hda-intel xxx

in that way that you will add your sound card model model=your_model

in my case I did this:

options snd-hda-intel xxx

bacame

options snd-hda-intel xxx model=ALC883

save and reboot

it should work

Note: xxx means other settings :) just in case

The only definitive list of quirks is in the source code.

There-after odd thing is if I use "Sound Recorder" or even Mangler from http://www.mangler.org/

I can hear myself through my speakers, but the sound never travels to my applications that need it.

I upgrade myself to the lastest version of Pulseaudio still with no fix.

The microphone still only works when using the LiveCD.

I'm running:

Pulse Audio v 0.9.21
Alsa v 1.0.20 (Stock with 9.10)

I got my microphone to work finally, probably from messing with alsamixer, but there are some lingering issues that I'm still watching.

After everything was working as it should I had to save my alsamixer settings via:

sudo alsactl store 0

After a restart my gnome volume would be muted so I had to do the following:

I commented out line 372 in /etc/init.d/alsa-utils:

# mute_and_zero_levels "$TARGET_CARD" || EXITSTATUS=1

Also my input settings for my microphone in the Gnome Sound Preferences sometimes has a check box in "muted" that I have to remove after a restart sometimes -- I'm still tracking that down

I've submitted a separate bug report #502223 and after some troubleshooting I was referred back to this bug report as it looks to be related.

I have an Alienware m9700 w/ nVidia CK804

Ever since the move to pulseaudio my built-in mic has not been working. With many of the same issues stated above.

I was finally able to get it working by changing the V_REFOUT in alsamixer to 2.25v instead of High-Z

(This almost acts like mute when set to 0v. When set to High-Z it almost as if there is so much interference that you don't hear the audio. I could turn the volume up all the way and I could here what I had recorded mixed in with the static. At 3.7v there was a little white noise in the background. At 2.25v everything was perfect)

This got the mic functioning but only with the hardware configured as "Analog Stereo 5.1 output + analog stereo input"

The problem with that is that everything played a bit fast and voices sounded as though the person was breathing helium.

I set the hardware config in the pulseaudio settings to "Analog Stereo Duplex"

And the following in alsamixer.
Surround Jack Mode: Independent
IEC958 Playback Source: AC-Link
V_REFOUT: 2.25v

For me it appears that it is a combination of settings between alsamixer and pulseaudio configurations.

Everything works perfectly now.

I forgot to mention that I am running 9.10. I have had the issue since 8.10. I think. It is hard to remember since it has been so long since it worked. Anyway, it was whenever the switch from esound to pulseaudio occurred. I have not tried this on Lucid yet.

For those of you that successfully use position_fix=1 to work around
this problem, please make sure to file a separate bug against
alsa-driver using "ubuntu-bug alsa-base" so that we can collect your
hw info and fix it upstream in linux.

The only solution to make microphone work is to install linux-backports-modules-alsa-generic...

Just go to:

Menu / System / Administration / Synaptic Package Manager

And search and mark for installation:

linux-backports-modules-alsa-generic

tip: if you have multiple versions click on the first and read the description which should inform what name to install...

If after the reboot and mic mute is off, still does not work, just go to terminal and type:

sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

and add or change the following:

options snd-hda-intel model=auto enable=yes

Then Ctrl+X, type Y to write and exit, reboot and mic will work.

Bye and have lots of fun with Ubuntu (the best).
