Same problem here using karmic on i386.

You can reproduce the error using the demo musicplayer in /usr/lib/qt4/examples/phonon/musicplayer
GStreamer-CRITICAL **: gst_element_make_from_uri: assertion `gst_uri_is_valid (uri)' failed

gstreamer and plugins are installed and working without any problems with gst-launch-0.10
gst-launch-0.10 playbin uri=file:/path/to/file.mp3 gives no errors

@Jonathan
It does not work with any kind of files.
Btw why this is marked as incomplete? What info is missing in the report?

This should be fixed in Kubuntu 10.04. Make sure you have gstreamer0.10-plugins-good installed, though.

You can upgrade to KDE 4.4 in Karmic, if you wish: http://www.kubuntu.org/news/kde-sc-4.4.2
