Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6-686-smp

The computer hangs as the system is trying to reboot. Displaying only the line: "Restarting system", I then have to restart it manually.
I've experienced this bug in an earlier version of Ubuntu (I think it was solved in the kernel for Hoary). As I upgraded to Dapper, the problem returned. It seems like it's kernel oriented; it doesn't matter, though, whether I use the i386, i686 or i i686-smp kernel architecture.
My motherboard is an ASUS P4S800-MX with a Celeron D processor. I've tried it on several other motherboards but the ASUS P4S800-MX is the only one that won't reboot.

This happens to me too, but only if I don't have a keyboard plugged in.

That patch is already in our source, so it is unrelated I think. Unless it is actually the cause of the problem.

It still hangs, whether I have the keyboard (PS/2) connected or not... Is it possible that this is an old bug that returned after modifications were made in the kernel? Not sure, but I think it appeared as the Ubuntu logo (the one that comes up during boot) was introduced. Maybe the kernel with the logo at boot time was built on an older kernel?

The logo doesn't come from the kernel. That's the usplash program that starts after the kernel has finished booting.

I see. I only knew that it wasn't "splashy". Might usplash cause this problem?

Can you please test this on the latest version of Ubuntu, Hardy Heron to see if its still a problem?

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this linux-source-2.6.15 kernel bug to the new "linux" package. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Also, if you would be interested in testing the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release, it is available at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . Please let us know your results. Thanks!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Unfortunately this bug report is being closed because we received no response to the last inquiry for information. However, the Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Beta release was most recently announced - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/beta . If you are able to confirm this is still an issue with this most recent release please feel free to reopen this report. To reopen the bug report you can click on the current status, under the Status column, and change the Status back to "New". Thanks.
