Minimized/unfocused update manager pop-up windows grab focus

Bug #45840 reported by ChristofferS

Bug Description

Using up-to-date dapper.

1. Click update-notifier icon. Update manager starts.
2. Click install.
3. Minimize the window.

Result: windows belonging to update-manager pops up.

They should not. Update-manager windows should be hidden and they have until a recently update changed that.

which dialog pops up exactly? could you please name the title of the window? do you refer to the install/download progress dialogs?

Two windows:

"Downloading package files"

and

the window after that (installing packages).

These windows pop up even if the main window is minimized.

This behaviour also occurs when the update manager is below another window - it grabs focus from the app on top, a Bad Thing (tm), and probably very un-HIG-ish.

Mind you, I'm quite a fan of the as-few-pop-ups-as-possible approach - see gedit error messages recently, or firefox's search bar. Obviously the immediate grabbing issue needs to be resolved as soon as possible, but perhaps a long-term solution would be to integrate and remove the pop-up dialogs :)

Why should removing the dialogs be a solution? See #46201

We need to add a feature to synaptic, that is used for the download and installation part, to hide the dialogs if the parent window is hidden. That should be doable.

Furthermore we could make use of the apt python bindings and integrate the download and installation part into update-manager itself.

I'm personally in agreement with the suggestion to integrate in 46201 but the main problem is the focus stealing. I didn't mean not show progress in any way!

I totally disagree with the suggestion of #46201. So I will work on the focus stealing problem. :)

Thanks. As long as it doesn't steal focus I'm happy.

This is a regression that happened some time before the dapper release. Is it not possible to revert that change?

This bug is extremely annoying.
