Bug Description

The machine fails to resume from suspend. It will power up for a second, then completely shut off. I power it back on, and it does a full bootup, starting from scratch (rather than the suspend point). It does this every time.

WORKAROUND: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AspireTimeline/Fixes#Suspend_to_RAM

ProblemType: KernelOops
Annotation: This occured during a previous suspend and prevented it from resuming properly.

Hi Jared,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 456916

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

[This is an automated message. Apologies if it has reached you inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

I have exactly the same issue as the original poster, also on an Acer Aspire Timeline 3810TZ, but using Ubuntu 10.04 (beta). Even with the latest BIOS from Acer/Inspyre (revision 1.24), the symptoms are the same: On resume, the machine spins up for a few seconds with the screen remaining dark, then switches off completely. Although I'm not the original poster, I will attach the information from apport-collect as instructed.

I was actually able to fix this issue (very recently) with an edit to the grub config:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AspireTimeline/Fixes (Scroll down to "Suspend to RAM")
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1165087&page=74

However, still seems to me that the edit shouldn't be necessary, but my pain is gone.

Jared,

thanks a lot for pointing me to the i8042.reset=1 boot option.
Suspend/resume works perfectly now!

Best regards,

I just fixed my suspend on my 13.3" Acer Aspire Timeline 3810TZ thanks to Launchpad, I don't know what bios version I have I just gave it a try and now everything works and I am happy as a pig in slop.
Here: https://launchpad.net/~acertimeline

Suspend:
Change GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="" to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="i8042.reset=1" in /etc/default/grub.
Run sudo update-grub.
Reboot.

Hope this helps all Acer Timelines

Jared Bunting, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Karmic reached EOL on April 30, 2011.
Please see this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

We were wondering if this is still an issue in a supported release? If so, can you please attach all relevant information following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspendHibernateResume ? As well, can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command in a supported release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
