I'm seeing intermittent compiz crashes when launching smplayer as well. Enabling 'loose binding' and setting Texture Filter to 'Best' seems to reduce the occurrence of this issue. I've yet to reproduce the problem with 'indirect rendering' enabled or with vdpau disabled. I did not have this problem in 8.10.
