Bug Description

Binary package hint: yelp

After the installation of karmic koala (beta) on my LG X110 Netbook I was not able to access any USB-Devices. I made a complete update via apt-get today but this did not help. The system worked fine with 9.04. I attached the output of "lsusb", "lsusb -v" and "dmesg" to this bug report.

output of "lsb_release -rd"
Description: Ubuntu karmic (development branch)
Release: 9.10

i'm also affected with the same problem. my machine is an MSI Wind U100. first install and several succeeding usage of ubuntu karmic beta worked fine.

however, recent updates (i update daily and it was the update from around 3-4 days ago, i think) resulted in non-functioning usb ports. devices not detected: usb thumb drives, ipod shuffle, usb mouse

don't know if this is relevant but i also lost the suspend feature. if i tried to suspend the machine, the screen would blank and the wifi would disconnect. however, the machine would still be on and the screen would still be on, though blanked out.

I can confirm the loss of the suspend feature (suspend to disk and ram). It seems that the usb-subsystem is blocking the suspend procedure. dmesg output attached.

i've been having this problem over several reboots. however, for some reason my latest reboot gave me back usb usage AND suspend functions. i haven't rebooted ever since and have kept my machine in suspend mode whenever i am not using it. i've also been checking for updates but i think its freeze time.

I am having the same Suspend problems mentioned above (on an Acer Aspire One 110, using Karmic UNR); but while USB devices have not been inaccessible for me, they did stop auto-mounting once I upgraded.

Downgrading to Jaunty's usbutils at least allowed me to auto-mount USB devices again, although Suspend is still a problem (and are probably related to bugs #448249 and #457936).

Yippee - other have this problem too - lets hope its fixed before the release next week! Can someone tell me how to downgrade to jaunty's usbutils please?

C-quel (c-quel) wrote :

Sure, but be careful as this is obviously quite "unofficial":

Download the DEB package for Jaunty's usbutils from here:

http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/usbutils

...And save it to your home directory. Then open up your Terminal and force-install that package using the following command:

sudo dpkg --install --force-downgrade usbutils_0.73-8ubuntu3_i386.deb

And that should about do it, although be careful whenever you do any updates as Karmic's usbutils will want to weasel back into your system. :P

As for myself, I've successfully completed testing of Karmic UNR, and aside from this, the Suspend issue, the weird menu bugs I've reported elsewhere and the unusually slow boots, there's really no other problems. Unfortunately, the above four are definitely deal-breakers so I'll need to switch my netbook back to something more production-friendly for the time being. The strange thing is that Kubuntu Karmic is pretty rock-solid and flawless (I've been using it on my primary desktop for three weeks), so not sure why UNR is so temperamental. ;P

IMHO, anyone who's interested in using UNR for production-level netbooks are best advised to stick with the Jaunty release for a little while longer. :)

Sorry, but downgrading to usbutils_0.73 has not resolved the problem. The USB malfunction of my LG X110 netbook seems to be kernel related. Perhaps there is a different bug in the USB-utilities.

Isn't this the same as bug #435352 ? Im on a MSI W100, clean Karmic alpha install. Since last week's update, can't see USB devices (nothing on dmesg when i plug them in), and can't suspend. There are at least 2 workarounds proposed (no true solutions yet), that make USB ports usable. One is downgrading usbutils to Jaunty. haven't tried that. The other is blacklisting the conflicting uvcvideo module ("blacklist uvcvideo" in /etc/modules) making built-in camera unusable, but restoring full USB and suspend functionality. it worked for me.
Hope they fix this issue before release.

I face this problem with Karmic Release Candidate.

Strangely, if the USB device is plugged during boot, I can see it in dmesg, lsusb and can mount it like usual.

But if I plug it once the PC has booted, I cannot see it in lsusb, nothing happens in dmesg, it is not visible palimpsest, etc.

#Ernesto, thanks a lot for your advise. After blacklisting "uvcvideo" in "/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf" the USB-ports of my netbook have been functional again :-) Till now I have made several reboots with success. My computer is also equipped with this bison webcam (ID 5986:0203) and I can't find any incoherence between bug #435352 and my problem. I will mark this report as duplicate of 435352. Can someone increase the importance level of bug 435352 because this issue seems to affect many people!

Just tried Manfred Bergners fix on my MSI Wind - and it worked for me too. All USB functionality restored - except for the camera of course.

Yep. Ernesto and Manfred's fix is working for me on my msi u100. Many thanks to both of you.

I've never needed that webcam anyway.

It might be worth mentioning for relative newbies like myself that the process is: open terminal, "sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf", enter password, then add "blacklist uvcvideo" to the end of the file.

knuutsen : yes, the webcam works fine, unless I blacklist the module uvcvideo.

Also, usb devices seem to get correctly mounted when they are plugged _before_ booting. But mounting does not happen when I plug the usb devices after boot.

i've upgrade from jaunty a few days ago.... i'm using a Portuguese equivalent of the msi wind u100 (i think)

Mark Cariaga (mzc) wrote : Re: [Bug 455408] Re: karmic: USB-Devices are not detected

As explained to me, 9.10 has undergone a major technology change. As
example is the shift from HAL to DeviceKit, which manages devices that
are install in the computer. This maybe the same reason why everything
is acting fuzzy.
