Bug Description

With a completely updated Karmic install (with kernel version 2.6.31-14-generic), I cannot connect to a hidden WEP network, even though I know the correct SSID and key. I can connect just fine to a public, non-secured network, however. I have not been able to test if it is just that the network is hidden that is tripping the driver up or because it is WEP. I don't have access to WPA[2] networks to test, either.

dmesg shows the following when network manager tries to connect:
[76941.191642] wlan0: authenticate with AP 00:00:00:00:00:00
[76941.388061] wlan0: authenticate with AP 00:00:00:00:00:00
[76941.590531] wlan0: authenticate with AP 00:00:00:00:00:00
[76941.788151] wlan0: authentication with AP 00:00:00:00:00:00 timed out
[76954.435772] wlan0: authenticate with AP 00:00:00:00:00:00
[76954.632086] wlan0: authenticate with AP 00:00:00:00:00:00
[76954.834411] wlan0: authenticate with AP 00:00:00:00:00:00
[76955.033147] wlan0: authentication with AP 00:00:00:00:00:00 timed out
[76963.887684] wlan0: authenticate with AP 00:00:00:00:00:00
[76964.084076] wlan0: authenticate with AP 00:00:00:00:00:00
[76964.284188] wlan0: authenticate with AP 00:00:00:00:00:00
[76964.484096] wlan0: authentication with AP 00:00:00:00:00:00 timed out

(Note I removed the MAC addresses and replaced them with zeros)
What I did notice about the MAC addresses was that it wasn't showing the right one. Instead, it was showing the AP's MAC address +1. For example, if the AP's MAC address was 00:11:22:33:44:55:66, then dmesg showed 00:11:22:33:44:55:67

[This is an automated message. Apologies if it has reached you inappropriately.]

This bug was reported against the linux-meta package when it likely should have been reported against the linux package instead. We are automatically transitioning this to the linux kernel package so that the appropriate teams are notified and made aware of this issue.

If this bug really is a bug in the linux-meta package you can move it back to linux-meta and set the Status to Confirmed, or contact us on the #ubuntu-kernel channel on the FreeNode IRC server. Thanks.

affects: linux-meta (Ubuntu) → linux (Ubuntu)

I have the same issue in Karmic with a WPA2 secured network and hidden SSID. Neither network-manager nor wicd are able to connect although SSID and password are known and entered correctly (well, wicd does not even ask me for the SSID of the hidden network ...). As soon as I tell my AP to broadcast the SSID, I'm able to connect just fine. My hardware is an ASUS A8Js notebook.

I'm still having this issue on Ubuntu 10.04 "Lucid Lynx" with latest updates (kernel 2.6.32-24-generic): The Intel 3945ABG adapter in my ASUS A8Js notebook cannot connect to to my FRITZ!Box Fon WLAN 7270 (security is set to "WPA + WPA2") if my SSID is hidden. It works fine if I broadcast the SSID, but I'd rather prefer not to for security reasons.
