!!FIXED!!

This error was due to me installing the add-ons from the web, not using the packages in synaptic. installing the following packages (removing the extensions from thunderbird first):

lightning-extension
calendar-google-provider
calendar-timezones

fixed all these issues. User error, my apologies.

For me I can't create a Calendar since upgrade to 9.10, and I've reinstalled using Package Manager. I'm also unable to set a time zone. I read that Lihtning needs some libstd++5 file, whilst 9.1 has ++6 - and even with apt-get install I can't poad a ++5 package - the cure for others facing similar problems.

Mervyn, the libstdc++5 package is no longer available in Karmic, so you need to remove the Lightning extension from inside Thunderbird (Tools->Addons), then install the lightning-extension package from the Universe repository. Your calendars and tasks from before the upgrade should still be available after this.
