If I leave empathy in "not available" mode for a while, when I come back I find the status changed to "available".

Thank you for your bug report. The issue is an upstream one and it would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug the to the people writting the software (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME)

low? status is low? This can be HIGHLY annoying, especially if the status is set to "AWAY" for good reason.

The patch was approved and merged upstream. I suppose this means it will be present in Gnome 2.30 and therefore in Lucid.
