Bug Description

After boot, I get a LOT of these. I.e. they keep coming. It's due to the USB Card Reader I'm using.

I have just rebooted my computer from Ubuntu 9.04 and verified it did not exhibit the same problems.

The problem is not new - see https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=463271

Same problem here!

...and lots of messages in errorlog too.

Btw, I have trouble with addon-storage on HAL too, generating a lot of messages in /var/log/messages:
# ps afx |grep hal
 2584 ? Ss 0:01 /usr/sbin/hald --daemon=yes
 2593 ? S 0:00 \_ hald-runner

 4473 ? S 0:01 \_ kdeinit4: kwrite [kdeinit] /home/jan/.kde4/Autostart/halrepair
 4755 pts/1 S+ 0:00 \_ grep hal

These message occur even when addon-storage is nog connected. My workaround here:
# sudo killall hald-addon-storage

But this is not a workaround for this new problem, which occurs after upgrading to Ubuntu 9.10 from 9.04.
Hope problem(s) can be solved.

This is most likely a kernel bug and would need to be filed in the kernel bug tracker (the Linux one...). For that, we would have to try a really really new kernel first to make sure the bug still exists. I did that at some point to 2.6.32, the bug was still there, but didn't get around to filing it as a kernel bug.

You can disable polling (which is better and more permanent than the "killall hald-addon-storage"), for example like this for any device with "Generic Flash HS" in its UDI:

lshal | grep '^udi.*Generic_Flash_HS' | cut -f3 -d" " | xargs -i+ hal-disable-polling --udi +

In my case, it was a card reader in the monitor that I don't use anyway.

Hi Dennis,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 452519

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

gmck (gmck) wrote :

I am seeing the same problem on Lucid Beta 2 (and daily updates as of 20-Apr).

In my case, this issue appears to be the cause of a significant boot delay. The boot delay shows up in two phases: a 60 second delay between power on and login prompt (kdm) and a second delay of about 30 seconds between login and kde being available. Neither of these problems were present in 9.04 - they were only seen after upgrading.

The discussion at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/hdparm/+bug/515023 seems to be relevant to this bug. The solution recommended there (https://bugs.launchpad.net/oem-priority/+bug/548513/comments/20) eliminated the first boot delay, but it did not eliminate the log messages.

example log messages:
[17507.445380] sd 4:0:0:3: [sde] Unit Not Ready
[17507.445386] sd 4:0:0:3: [sde] Sense Key : Illegal Request [current]
[17507.445395] sd 4:0:0:3: [sde] Add. Sense: Logical unit not supported

Following a recommendation in the forums, I added "nohdparm" to the grub kernel line at boot time. This eliminated both of the boot delays and the log messages. However, I don't know what side effects "nohdparm" may have on the system.
