correction to my above comment .a little more checking of my boot charts and I found that this started for me on october 2 not 13 , after an update to couchdb-bin to 0.10.0~svn818859-0ubuntu1 . not there before the update is there on the next boot .

After removing couchdb (but leaving couchdb-bin) this bug is solved for me. I've attached before bootchart to this post.

And this is the after bootchart.

the couchdb and couchdb-bin packages were split apart for this very reason. couchdb isn't included in the default install anymore, without it the service doesn't start. I don't think an upgrade will remove that automatically, but only affects alpha users. I am pretty sure it was fixed prior to beta.

Not fixed here after removal of couchdb.

I dont believe this is a duplicate. It is still happening after removing couchdb.

Check to see if you have an init script for couchdb, /etc/init.d/couchdb

That initscript isn't included in the couchdb-bin package, it is in couchdb. Please include the output of these commands

dpkg -l |grep couchdb
dpkg -S /etc/init.d/couchdb

Thanks

Ok this is the output.
philinux@philinux-karmic:~$ dpkg -l |grep couchdb
rc couchdb 0.10.0-0ubuntu1 RESTful document oriented database, system D
ii couchdb-bin 0.10.0-0ubuntu1 RESTful document oriented database, programs
ii libcouchdb-glib-1.0-1 0.5.2-0ubuntu1 GLib-based API for CouchDB
ii python-couchdb 0.6-1 library for working with Apache CouchDB
philinux@philinux-karmic:~$ dpkg -S /etc/init.d/couchdb
couchdb: /etc/init.d/couchdb

Only couchdb-bin installed

Yeah, but you have config files that dpkg didn't remove from your system when couchdb was removed. That "rc" status shows it was removed, but config files are still there. "dpkg -P couchdb" will purge them.

Ok job done thanks.

Should the system itself have sorted this out when couchdb-bin took over.

Actually no, it is considered a config file, and dpkg treats those different for your own safety. It doesn't remove config files that you might have changed.
