Bug Description

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Run checkbox (System Testing) under Karmic Koala 9.10 beta daily build 20091012 desktop fresh install on Dell Latitude C640 laptop.
2. Audio tests include detailed instructions that lack override for system default audio settings--in my case the output was muted and the output volume <=11%.

I unchecked the mute option and increased the output volume to 20% and the sound file test produced audible results.

I suppose an alternative would be to save original settings and change them automatically for the test--restoring the original settings after test completion.

This isn't so much a bug as a wishlist feature that could be added as an improvement to the audio tests. I agree that this is probably a good idea. Even if we just ensure that the Mic is actually unmuted ;-)

In any case setting this as confirmed and wishlist and hoping we can find time to implement this.

We've had issues on a large enough number of machines in the cert labs where mixer settings disappear after suspend that I think addressing this bug will fix that issue and make the audio tests in general work better.

My idea would be a master audio_test script (similar to what I did with USB test) that contains the stuff necessary to do all the different tests.

Then, we could set up a local job to gather mixer settings at the time checkbox starts and store that in a file, have the test itself adjust mixer settings to a given setting and unmute if necessary, and then restore to original settings.

The audio tests now use a new audio_settings script to store the previous settings, set sane mixer values and run the test, and then restore existing settings.
