Got same problem here. Theme change does not help. AFIK on Jaunty this problem does not appear.

I got the same problem today too. I installed the system anew 2 days ago to avoid having upgrade problems, but kept part of my home directory. I am quite sure I had bars to begin with (grey ones to be precise), but today they appear to be white or transparent (numbers are shifted as if the bars were there...)

I have the same problem since upgrading to Karmic. In Jaunty it looked nice, but in Karmic no bars and the number it shows i figured is the total number of half hours instead of whole hours. (e.g. it shows 11.2 instead of 5.6).

I have the same with Karmic RC1.

However, I've seen something like this happen with the Jaunty version of Hamster too, when I was playing around with more recent versions of the Intel Graphics driver. Reverting back to the Jaunty version of the driver fixed the problem.

Maybe this issue is related to the Intel Graphics driver...

It seems it is in fact the intel version, a colleague using Fedora 12 had the same problem with Intel drivers 2.9.0 and the problem disappeared after he received a 2.9.1 update.

I can agree it's an intel issue. Working perfectly fine on an NVIDIA system

It is definitely related to the intel driver: from the x-org-edgers PPA I've tried intel driver version 2:2.9.0+git20091026.10946118-0ubuntu0tormod, and the bars in the hamster reappeared.
It broke my compiz though, so I'm back to the old driver...
