Bug Description
Binary package hint: nvidia-glx-185
When upgrading from Jaunty to Karmic (Beta ) the laptop was unable to start X. After the reboot there was only a blank screen.
The xorg.conf was referencing the nvidia binary driver which was not found. I rebooted the system in recovery mode and changed the xorg.conf to start X using vesa. I then tried to reinstall the nvidia-glx package but this did not solve the problem.
To resolve the issue temporarily I downloaded the binary driver from the Nvidia website.

Hmm, this sounds like it is not building the driver.
Could you please find and attach your build log that shows this issue? The file will be found someplace like:
/var/lib/ dkms/nvidia/ 185.18. 36/build/ make.log
The numbered directory may be different depending on what version you have installed, but if you poke around it should be somewhere like that.
