Bug Description

Fully updated karmic system. Fails to suspend. The system blanks the screen and there's some hard drive activity, but the backlight stays on, and the power light never begins to fade in and out (as it would if suspended). This worked just fine in jaunty. I tried it with and without the nvidia kernel modules installed. This report is from the install without the nvidia modules.

ProblemType: KernelOops
Annotation: This occured during a previous suspend and prevented it from resuming properly.

I have a similar problem in terms of symptoms on a Dell Inspiron 9400, also running Karmic.

In my case, the suspend only fails the _second_ time I attempt it after a fresh boot. The first time seems to suspend and resume fine (although obviously something is different). It began to occur after the last kernel upgrade (although it may be related to one of the other many packages that also upgraded), so its only been happening the last couple of days.

Scott, is this the same with you? If not i'll open a new bug report.

@Henry: No, this failure occurs each and every time after installation. That would be a separate bug.

It seems that this problem only occurs on Ubuntu (the Gnome version). Kubuntu suspends and resumes just fine, so this probably isn't a kernel problem. I'm not sure where the differences start between the two though.

The problem also occurs when hibernating.

As Henry, my laptop suspends fine the first time after a fresh boot but fails the second time.

This problem still occurs in the final release. It occurs in both the 32 and 64 bit releases.

@Philippe: your problem is a separate bug.

Hi Scott,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 451162

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Actually, it is still present, but I fixed it myself. I forgot I had filed this bug or I would have posted the solution here. The problem is caused by the SD card reader built into the laptop. I keep a memory card in it pretty much all the time. For some reason the reader prevents the laptop from sleeping completely. So, I just have it unload the kernel module for the reader prior to suspend and reload it upon resume. This is done by creating (or editing) a file called 10modules in /etc/pm/config.d to contain the following

    SUSPEND_MODULES="sdhci_pci sdhci mmc_block mmc_core"

Simple as that. It still has the annoying problem of remounting your SD card every time you reboot which causes a new Nautilus window to pop up, but I've learned to deal with it.
