64bit mplayer reports its version as UNKNOWN-4.4.1

Binary package hint: mplayer

mplayer on 64-bit Karmic reports its version to be UNKNOWN-4.4.1, causing other players (like smplayer) to a confusion.

Only 64-bit version seems to be affected, 32-bit mplayer reports as SVN-r29237-4.4.1.

Smplayer doesn't recognize UNKNOWN-4.4.1

smplayer tries to identify the mplayer version, but if it identifies as "MPlayer UNKNOWN-4.4.1", how can smplayer know what version it is? It's impossible.

You should send a bug report against the mplayer package instead, as mplayer is not displaying the correct version number.

(Although I installed the mplayer package in karmic and it didn't have this issue)

I installed mplayer-nogui, not mplayer. Maybe this is the problem?

No, I've just install mplayer-nogui (2:1.0~rc3+svn20090426-1ubuntu10) and the identification string is correct:

Did you compile mplayer yourself?

Reinstalling mplayer doesn't help - it still reports as UNKNOWN-4.4.1.

I had some major issues with my Ubuntu installation (I installed it in the beta stage), so I reinstalled everything. Still, mplayer claims its version is UNKNOWN-4.4.1. How did You get SVN-r29237-4.4.1 version? Do You use i386 Ubuntu version? I run amd64.

I've just installed it with "sudo apt-get install mplayer-nogui", with no extra repositories enabled.

Yes, I'm using the i386 version. Unfortunately it seems I can't test the amd64 on virtualbox.

I checked both versions on VMs run on VirtualBox and I can confirm that x86 version of mplayer-nogui reports correctly, whereas 64-bit one has broken version identifier.

It's definitely mplayer package bug.
