tty does not work when splash is enabled in the kernel arguments

Whenever linux version 2.6.31-13-generic is booted with the arguments: "/vmlinuz-2.6.31-13-generic root=UUID=335a4e39-f255-4514-a028-667aa435f9cf ro quiet splash" the tty does not work. Whenever I hit Ctrl+Alt+F1, a screen of bizarre nonchanging colors appears and commands don't work. However, hitting Ctrl+Alt+F7 takes you back to gdm beautifully. You can also watch usplash boot, however, when you press Alt+F1 to drop out of usplash, a similar problem happens, only the still image of usplash is still mostly visible, only with a greenish line about 1/5 of the way up the screen.

However, when the splash argument is not passed to the kernel, the tty will work fine.
