Bug Description

Binary package hint: qemu-kvm

When starting kvm with vesa emulation (-vga std), kvm freezes at the new graphical boot splash and shows a black screen. Kvm boots fine when removing the 'splash' option from /boot/grub/grub.cfg in the guest. I first noticed the problem after upgrading to 2.6.31-13.

Command I use start kvm: kvm -vga std -soundhw es1370 -m 512M -hda ubu0910.cow

root@tnolte:~# dpkg -l qemu-kvm
ii qemu-kvm 0.11.0-0ubuntu Full virtualization on i386 and amd64 hardwa

root@tnolte:~# lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu karmic (development branch)
Release: 9.10

What if you drop the "-vga std" option?

The standard cirrus driver works fine - the problem only occurs with vesa.

The reason for using vesa is that I can get my native resolution (1680x1050) while cirrus is restricted to 1280x1024.

The workaround for vesa is to either remove the 'splash'-option in grub.cfg or boot the recovery kernel (which does not have this option).

Marking as duplicate. I'm working on getting -vga std working right now.
