installation of UMR iso fails with hang and loop

I cannot install the 10-10-09 or 10-11-09 umr iso. When choosing the install option, after the Ubuntu splash screen a console briefly appears, the desktop is briefly shown then it switches back to console. Then it gets into a loop of desktop, back to console with no way to break out or switch to a virtual terminal.
Trying to run the image live from the iso results in a hang, with the last thing on the console saysing "Stopping NTP server ntpd", "Starting NTP server ntpd".
Wondering if this could be related to new mountall package. Cody guessed it might b the recent change in mountall 0.2.0 to fix LP #431204 is the culprit.

Could be bug 448981. Just manifesting itself a little different on UMR iso.
