It works after I deleted ~/.config/vlc so I'm marking it as invalid.

Changed in vlc (Ubuntu):
status: New → Invalid

Same in Ubuntu 11.10 with VLC 1.1.11:

VLC media player 1.1.11 The Luggage (revision exported)
[0x8d2392c] main libvlc error: verbose-objects usage:
--verbose-objects=+printthatobject,-dontprintthatone
(keyword 'all' to applies to all objects)

But thanks to Igor, this workaround helps: deleting ~/.config/vlc
