Bug Description

Binary package hint: xkeyboard-config

Austrians and Germans have the same keyboards, however, you can only select "Germany" as keyboard layout setting. This doesn't bother me much, but in the new gdm it displays "Germany" as keyboard layout every time I boot the system. It's like displaying "Keyboard layout: US" to somebody from Great Britain all the time.

Suggestion: Rename those keyboard layouts from "Germany*" to "German*" to have a more neutral effect.

There has been a discussion several years ago as to whether keyboard layouts should be categorized by languages or countries. The result of the discussion was to categorize them by country. There are several advantages to this.

I am closing this report. Below are some informal suggestions on how to move forward.

There is no 'at' (Austria) entry in the xkeyboard-config project. If you can find official information on Austrian keyboard layout (specifically information that says that the Austrians are "re"-using the German keyboard layout, you can ask to create an Austria entry.
1. The 'at' layout file for Austria would look something like

default
xkb_symbols "basic" {

    include "de(basic)"

    name[Group1]="Austria";

};

2. See, for example, http://simos.info/blog/archives/1134 for info on how to install on your computer. You need to edit a couple of files, then you can select from th Keyboard Preferences.

3. Visit https://bugs.freedesktop.org/ and create a new bug report for product 'xkeyboard-config', with the new layout.

Good luck!
