wxMaxima fails any calculation

Binary package hint: wxmaxima

Every attempt at calculating ANYTHING, like

wxplot3d(x^2 + y^2, [x,-5,5], [y,-5,5]);

 results in the following error:

I have reinstalled from the repository every app associated with wxMaxima but nothing helps.
I am running Kubuntu 9.10 Karmic with the latest updates, as of 10/9/2009.

Same problem here, can't even show sqrt(3). Windows version works fine

I compiled and installed wxmaxima 0.8.3a and everything works fine now.
