Hi there, I'm unsure if this is a false positive on the apport bug tool. Can you verify if suspend/resume works correctly for me? Thanks.

Hi,

I would like to confirm suspend works, but the laptop does not resume. It just comes back for few seconds (HDD light flashing, ...), but then it powers off completely.

However, apport seemed to have noticed the problem only 30mins after that had happened. Which I found quite confusing..

Sorry for my report has not been so clear.

Hi kramerstefan,

Not being able to resume after a suspend could be a BIOS issue or a driver resume bug. To be able to debug this further, please can you following the instructions from the wiki page: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend up to (but not including) the "Further Hints" section. Please update the bug report with your findings. Thank you!

Hi Colin,

I have tried to follow https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DeuggingKernelSuspend. Unfortunately, I could not find any useful information in the dmesg.txt. Maybe this is because resume did not access the HDD? Anyway, I attach my dmesg.txt and hope it still contains some information which could be useful.

Hi kramerstefan,

The dmesg contained the following information which may indicate the problem is occurring in the USB driver:

[ 1.033278] Magic number: 13:916:820
[ 1.033313] ehci_hcd 0000:00:1a.7: hash matches

Because the debug state is stored in the real time clock I'm not 100% confident that we are picking up false hit here. Do you mind re-doing the test and attaching dmesg again so I can sanity check the results. Thanks!
However, it's not 100% clear to me that this is

Hi Kramerstefan,

Sorry to not get back to you earlier. The dmesg output you attached does not give me any significant information on why the suspend is failing. I will need to think of a different strategy to debug this.

I think this is the same problem as with the Acer Aspire 3810T and 4810T. For the 4810T, it was fixed with a BIOS update by Acer, but for now, they don't provide one for the 3810T. Probably, the bug for the Travelmate 8471 is caused by the BIOS as well. More information can be found in this post on ubuntuforums.org: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=8445150&postcount=560

@kramerstefan,

From what I can see on several comments, the BIOS for this machine is known to cause issues with suspend/resume, although I've not seen any specific solution.

Your BIOS is version 1.02 (01/09/2009) however I spotted that BIOS version 1.27 arrived on 19/11/2009, so it may be worth reflashing with that and seeing if this fixes things. Beware that reflashing the BIOS has risk associated with it and will render a machine unusable if the wrong BIOS image is used and if the reflashing fails.

Hi Colin,

okay, I would be willing to upgrade the BIOS to version 1.27. But I've absolutely no idea how to do it. If you could point me the right direction... I would be happy to test if the new BIOS could improve things.

Hi, I have had a Travelmate 8471 for a few weeks now and tryed to get suspend to work, I had flashed the latest Bios 1.27 but suspend didn't work. With Bios 1.27 the CPU Fan of my machine became a lot noisier then before, so I flashed back to 1.02. So don't bother flashing 1.27. I'll try when another Bios comes out and will report back.

Hi, I have got the same bad experience with the BIOS 1.27 (noisier cpu fan) and I just downgraded it to 1.02. Does anybody tried to flash BIOS 1.24?

matth (matth-schmitt) wrote :

Hi,

@babbamaic: I've tried 1.24 and yes, the fan stays up and running on unsupportable levels. Fan control is not working: I only get sensor readings but no way of controlling the fan.

I needed the update to get the DVD drive working, and am pissed: what tradeoff is that?

The suspend doesn't work for me either, but it does under win xp (downgraded from vista)

If anybody comes across a solution for the fan problem: let me know! Thanks.

I think the next step to do is to see if the bug has been resolved with the current upstream kernels. Perhaps you could select the appropriate latest kernel from the upstream kernel daily build http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/daily and see if this fixes the suspend/resume issue. If it does, we can work from there to see if a fix can be back-ported.

Hi Colin,

I had installed the latest linux-image-2.6.33-999-generic_2.6.33-999.201002121003 and matching kernel headers from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/daily. Unfortunately, it did not change anything and the laptop is still unable to resume properly from suspend.

Anyway, I will keep an eye on the mainline kernels to see if there is any progress to get the problem solved.

Dear all, if you own a Timeline 8471 model, did you try flashing with the new BIOS 1.34a (http://global-download.acer.com/GDFiles/BIOS/BIOS/BIOS_Acer_1.34_A_A.zip?acerid=634048324725226380&Step1=Notebook&Step2=TravelMate&Step3=TravelMate%208471&OS=V10&LC=en&BC=Acer&SC=EMEA_8 )? Did the problems with non-controlled fan, resulting from BIOS 1.24 - 1.27, get solved? Thanks a lot!
