Karmic: not able to switch empathy status; status options greyed out

After an update/full-upgrade and a suspend/resume, the indicator session applet will no longer let me change my Empathy status. Empathy seems to be running and working normally, including letting me change my status. The indicator session applet's icon has changed to a "power switch" icon instead of its previous "talk bubble" icon.

Using the network manager applet I disconnected and reconnected from the WLAN, to check whether this was a race condition between connectivity/networkmanager and Empathy/indicator-session when resuming from the suspend, but that didn't help.
