Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

The behavor of X and KDE with new 4.3.2 updates makes use of OpenGL dangerously unuseful - unpredictably crashes at a point when an KDE effect is used by kwin. In some cases use of opengl desktop effect cause memory corruption of another application.

a temporary solution for this is simply set to off OpenGL support in desktop. (But of course it is not good).

Video is ATI Mobility Radeon X2100 (or HD 2300)

It seems to me that some solution I have got:

https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2009-October/029312.html

setting radeon.modeset=1 is helpful indeed and disables crashes. tty mode looks fine to me with this param.

I have used direct test providing "radeon.modeset=1" into /etc/defaults/grub (default kernel options where option splash resides). Then update-grub to rebuild grub.cfg.

I suspect there is a better place for customize radeon driver settings, so the question is where to put such a helpful parameter?

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy. Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

The crash is with the ATI X1600 and X600 in any time the effects on, the last update is at 10.10.2009. I have check this on 3 PC with Intel-chipset and ATI-card, radeon driver! The KDE crash and the login-screen is present.

Can you confirm whether this is still an issue in natty?

If you don't mind, it would be very helpful if you could update the bug
report in launchpad to 'Fix Released' if it is no longer an issue for
you, or if it is still occurring under natty, please tag the bug 'natty'
so it's easier for us to track.

natty works fine after 'do-release-upgrade' for me, except blur effect: enabling it autodisables effects by KDE at all.

It is just annoying thing, that can be reverted by manually adjust kwinrc settings, so it is no more a bug for me.
