Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-openchrome

Distro version
Description: Ubuntu 9.04
Release: 9.04
Package version
xserver-xorg-video-openchrome:
  Installed: 1:0.2.903+svn713-1ubuntu1
  Candidate: 1:0.2.903+svn713-1ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 1:0.2.903+svn713-1ubuntu1 0
        500 http://hk.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Instead of a kdm login screen, I got a blank screen and no response to the keyboard or the mouse upon attempting to logout the second time. This is reproducible each time. Boot up, logon, logout, logon, logout, ssh into box to send kdm a HUP signal, repeat logon/logout.

Attaching kdm.log and a backtrace. svn800 openchrome driver also tried with the same result.

If you can from after reproducing this crash (or /var/log/Xorg.log.old).

Please attach higher importance to this bug...the box is for a multi-user environment which is why I encountered this.

Attaching Xorg.0.log which is after crash. Please note that when Xorg terminates after receiving the CONT signal after the backtrace of the stack after receiving the ABORT signal, kdm restarts Xorg (as usual I guess...)

Is this bug existed on the previous revision of the openchrome (for example in Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid)?

Nothing special about the xorg.conf file. I did not touch that file and it just has the Device, Monitor and Screen sections with Default and Configured blah blah entries.

Never tried Inteprid on that box. It is a new installation. I cannot test that sorry.

Whoa...I guess I should install Ubuntu desktop and switch to gdm and see if the same thing happens?

Installed ubuntu-desktop metapackage, switched to gdm, rebooted and did the login/logout stuff. No problems encountered. I'll just kiss kdm goodbye for the moment seeing that it does not handle Xorg's crash as well as gdm does.

This bug is very similar to:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-openchrome/+bug/454128

Please build/install the latest openchrome driver and enable debug mode.
The detail build instruction for Ubuntu/Debian is available at:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenChrome

Then attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file.

The problem appears between openchrome svn713 (Ubuntu Jaunty) and svn758 (Ubuntu Karmic Koala).

Please check in which revision this problem appeared.

You can jump between releases, by typing command:

  svn update -r730

More information is available at:
http://www.openchrome.org/trac/ticket/333

It will be very useful in resolve this problem.

Hello Bartosz,

I am sorry but I no longer have access to the box in question. Not for
debugging and it is no longer connected to the Internet.

I did try the latest openchrome driver then. svn revision 800 is the I
used if you take a look at the Xorg.0.log.old file that I uploaded.

regards,

Christopher

The duplicate status is wrong. I do not suffer the same problem as https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/467967. In that report, Xephon has problems logging in. I do not have a problem logging in. I have a problem after the second LOGOUT. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-openchrome/+bug/454128 might be a duplicate of this bug but in Karmic.

upstream have replaced http://www.openchrome.org/trac/ticket/333 with http://www.openchrome.org/trac/ticket/335 , that mentioned 2 ubuntu bugs bug #471646 and bug #454128 . maybe someone who understands better can sort out the mess of possible duplicates.

http://www.openchrome.org/trac/ticket/333 and http://www.openchrome.org/trac/ticket/335 reports are NOT similar to this bug. Both those reports are about failures to load KDE. I had no problems loading KDE. I had a problem getting the kde login screen AFTER the second logout which could only be worked around by sending a HUP signal to kdm. I suppose you might even say kdm has a bug in not handling stuck/dead X although I do not understand why there were no problems with the first instance of logout.
