Bug Description

When translation, input and font support for Tamil (ta) are installed via Language Selector in Ubuntu Karmic - Beta I find 34 packages get downloaded and installed whereas only 9 of them are needed if installed via Synaptic PM or Apt. I have tried on Ubuntu 9.10-Beta - i386 Live CD having Gnome DT. The list of installed packages are in my following tinypaste:

http://tinypaste.com/beafb

(You can press the Blue button above to Go Full Screen mode to view the list more clearly)

What I have collected as Set 1 are the 9 packages that are sufficient for the intended purposes if installed via Synaptic.

The Set 2 are the rest 25 packages installed by Language Selector and they are totally about 60 MBs. I don't see any necessity for them for Tamil localised usage. If there are reasons for them i like to know about those.

In the past I used to be peeved that the IM setting (for Complex Script input) by Language Selector was rather restrictive since it was forcing only to scim + scim-bridge agents as well as because it was explanatory about the usage of im-switch in the background. Now I appreciate the more choices included and in fact Language Selector is a goo GUI companion to im-switch. it could be recommended to new users as a convenient approach for the purpose for setting IM they desire.

However if only necessary and sufficient packages for language localized usage are installed and not the unnecessary ones then Language Selector could also be advocated for installing these language support packages.

In the above, instead of "it was explanatory" it should be "it was not explanatory"

also

//..in fact Language Selector is a goo GUI companion to im-switch.//

"a good GUI" instead of a goo GUI

Thanks

I have just uploaded version 0.5.1 of language-selector into Lucid (10.04). Could you please test if this is still an issue?
Thanks a lot.
