Bug Description

Binary package hint: x11-xserver-utils

In Jaunty, I used the command: " sudo xrandr --output VGA --mode 1280x1024@60 "

as an alias to switch my Lenovo X61 laptop screen to my external 20 " LCD monitor.

When I run this command in Karmic when on the on-board display, it does not switch to the external display at all.

I would like to keep this functionality with xrandr if possible.

Thank you, Stefan

I have a similar problem. When I dock my laptop at work its connected to a pair of external monitors which for some reason I've needed a shell script to configure them. However at some point in the karmic release cycle the script stopped working. The DVI output doesn't change resolution and the VGA output never enables. However if I do the equivalent steps through gnome-display-properties it works.

Further information

The steps I have to take are:

Switch off the laptop's own display (LVDS1)
Add the correct mode to VGA1
Set HDMI1 to the correct resolution
Set VGA1 to the correct resolution and move it to the right of HDMI1

I've done a bit more testing.

The problems with the VGA out happen when the laptop lid is closed. If I boot and run the script nothing changes. When I open the lid both external displays go to the correct resolution in clone mode. I suspect there is something funny going on with detecting how to use external VGA when the laptop lid is closed.

The output name has changed from VGA to VGA1. This is to make naming consistent across all drivers. Previously, each driver had its own naming system for the monitors.
