Bug Description

Binary package hint: terminator

Terminator "flickers" when I use tab completion. When typing a command or a path, pressing tab once will make the screen flicker or flash white for a second. Pressing tab a second time will complete the command as normal.

I can also reproduce the flickering by opening a terminator window and holding the Backspace key.
I am unable to reproduce the issue on v0.12-2, but it seems to be present on 0.13

This happens with transparency and without.

This sounds like a description of the terminal bell - we default to a visual flash instead of a beep because it's less annoying

OK - will add force_no_bell to my config tomorrow.
It definitely behaves in a different way to 0.12 though - is this intentional? If so, I will mark this bug as invalid.

I don't immediately recall any huge differences in that area - I presume you're upgrading from an older ubuntu to a newer one? It's possible you're seeing more terminal bells from bash, but I'm not sure offhand.
We can leave the bug open if you want, and see if anyone else notices it.

I notice it too, on all 3 of my machines. It's pretty annoying. How do I turn off the visual bell?

Make a config file in your ~/.config/terminator directory and add this line:
force_no_bell=True

See the man page for terminator_config for more information too - there's a heap of configurable options there.

Thanks for the pointer on the visual bell, that fixes it! I have to admit this setting is visually abrasive and I'm not sure it makes a good default; I (and my co-worker) assumed it was a graphical bug as a few others did here. Any thoughts on defaulting to no bell at all?

By the way I am on a fresh 9.10 install with terminator 0.13+ds1-2. Thanks for the great work on terminator overall, it is quite excellent!

I think having no bell representation at all is a mistake, which leaves the options being audible or visual and the former is intensely annoying. I think VTE intends to implement a bell signal, at which point we could do something more attractive than flash the terminal.

In trunk I've switched the default bell to flashing a tasteful little icon on the terminal titlebar. No flashing of the terminal and no beeping, but all of the options can be switched on/off by the user. Everyone wins!
