Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-mplayer

When I have gnome-mplayer set to use Xv output, it loses the video in place of a gray square often. It seems to happen most when it's fullscreen. It will fullscreen properly for a moment, but will turn into a big gray square when the controls shift away. This can be bypassed by removing the controls altogether, but it still occurs again any popup, such as a notification, happens.
This behavior is annoying and needs to be fixed.

Know issue, according to upstream (http://groups.google.com/group/gnome-mplayer/browse_thread/thread/62d2e9fd9d8e90ff#) this is due to libgtk, so, reassigning accordingly.

Just as an FYI, this problem does not seem to happen on Fedora Rawhide with gtk2 2.18.1. I'm unsure what version is being used in Karmic.

You can also open gconf-editor and change /apps/gnome-mplayer/preferences/disable_animation to true and see if that fixes it. The checkbox in 0.9.8 doesn't work due to a coding error that was fixed on Oct 5, 2009.

Disabling animation still doesn't fix the problem, the video still turns grey when the controls disapear in fullscreen.

We have just got 2.18.1, so, does that change anything?

I already had 2.18.1 installed when I filed this bug, so no, it didn't fix it.

@kevin, do you maintain your position that this is a gtk+ problem, or should I reopen the gnome-mplayer task? I know its difficult for you since you cannpot reproduce, but if you need any info just ask.

bug #447874 look very similar to this (same circumstances but flickering).

Does setting "export GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS=1" in the terminal affect this in anyway?

found this in this document: http://library.gnome.org/devel/gtk/2.18/gtk-migrating-ClientSideWindows.html

Also 447874 is a dup of this issue.

I maintain that it may be a gtk issue, at least needs to be looked at. Because the code that does the drawing and positioning should work the same for GTK 2.16 and 2.18. I have a 2.16 machine available and I will try and test on it in a couple of days.

More convinced it is a gtk 2.18 issue. I ran SVN of gnome-mplayer on my gtk 2.14 machine and did not have the gray blocks when I resized the window using either x11 or gl output over ssh -X.

I also was able to test on my 2.16 machine and did not see the same issue as on the 2.18 machine. So appears to be a regression in GTK

BTW, I was incorrect stating that I did not see the problem on my Fedora machine. The problem does occur there with gtk 2.18.2 as well.

It seems there have been patches submitted upstream for both gnome-mplayer and gtk, when will they reach Ubuntu?

Nothing will be done for gnome-mplayer in karmic unless gtk gets patched/backported.
