"Password:" is shown untranslated, and can't be translated

Binary package hint: gdm

Using Karmic Beta, fully updated until 20091005, the "Password:" prompt at the login screen shows untranslated in my Spanish desktop, and can't be translated because there isn't in the Launchpad template:

This is caused by bug 442742, not gdm.

Aron, the bug #442978 doesn't seems to be the same problem as bug
#442742. The "Password" string is not in the Launchpad template, so I
can't translate it. The bug #442742 seems to be related to .mo files, not
about a missing string in the .pot file.

I have to say this is not a problem from gdm and sure caused by bug #442742, because the "_Password:" is from policykit-gnome package other than gdm itself.

After this update, Password's translation also doesn't show up in my native language (zh_CN).

I have tested it one a virtual machine that was not updated and not affected by bug 442742.
The problem is still there.

Aron, your info is very valuable.
Do you know exactly how the Password label is displayed in the GDM greeter.
I was looking at the gdm-greeter-login-window.glade and gdm-greeter-login-window.c and it looks like auth-prompt-label is set to an empty string.

the label is correctly translated on the beta image so it's not a gdm issue but rather a language pack one

The Password text comes from PAM. If it's not coming up translated, that means
either the PAM module isn't translated or you don't have the translations for
the pam module installed.

The password prompt is correctly translated there on current karmic that really seems broken translations and not a gdm bug

The upstream comment seems to be right. At least, there's a "Password: -> Contraseña" translation inside Linux-PAM.mo file in Jaunty:

Can't say the same in Karmic now, due to the broken langpacks.

The translation of "Password:" appears when I build a Linux-PAM.mo from a po exported of launchpad, so we can confirm this is a language pack issue rather than gdm. I would like to mark it duplicate again.
