I got the same bug on a amd64 architecture, ubuntu 9.10 Beta.
I was 'sent' here from aport, but I was unable to attach the neccesary support files.
So far, I have only succeeded in doing so (being able to post the attachments) by reporting a new bug.

Affecting me as well...

Other thing Empathy is not so user friendly. When someone sends you a message, the notification pops up, but it is very awkward to get to the message its self. You have to look through all the buddy list until you notice the flashing icon of the person who is trying to chat with you...

Should be fixed with telepathy-butterfly 0.5.2, if not please reopen the bug.

A. Leon > Normally you can access the message directly via the Ubuntu indicator or via the systray if you disabled the indicator in the preference.

The issue is fixed in karmic in fact so no need to comment
