Mac OS X: file selection very slow, even if "file preview" is disabled

Bug Description

Mac OS X 10.4.11, G4 PPC

On both - the X11 and die aqua version inkscape waits several seconds when I select a svg file in the "open file" dialog. I could understand this behaviour in the case of the "preview" option selected - app is rendering the preview. But it occurs with the checkbox unchecked as well - as if it were rendering as well, just not displaying the preview.

Greetings,

Wolf

(except when selecting documents like those attached in bug #441777 that have linked bitmaps with the size of 16 MB)

- Does it happen with _every_ file? If not, could you attach a sample?
- Does it happen with other GTK+ based applications (like GIMP) as well?

I have to distinguish between X11 and aqua:

X11:
I'm working on a 1,2MB doc with a 1,6 MB bitmap linked. Selecting (highlighting) this takes up to 15 sec. on a G4 with 1,35 GHz - and also the de-selecting (switching to the next file in the list) takes several seconds. Done so, small files are selected without noticeable delay.

aqua:
The big file takes 10-15 seconds. Sometimes - not ever - then selecting small ones takes as long. Especially browsing across pdf files can be annoying. I stopped switching between two folders after more than 30 sec.
Cancelling the open-dialogue and reopening it seems to make things worse.

Sorry - I dont have something of that kind.

Then this is unlikely to be related to Inkscape reading/rendering the document for a preview - at least on OS X Leopard I have never seen a preview for a PDF file in the GtkFileChooser. Does the number of files in the folders have an influence on how quickly you can browse and select a file?

more questions:
- which Inkscape (X11) version are you using - 0.46-3 or 0.47pre1-1?
- was it always so slow (before you installed MacPorts, built the Aqua version and run both versions)?
- is it as slow if you choose 'Recently Used' in the top left list in the filechooser dialog?

No, I didnt see a pdf preview either. The "slow selecting" happens mostly with svg files, but sometimes with others, and even with folders.

X11: "cmd-I" says just 0.46
As far I remember this ocurred before the Aqua compiling orgy
The X11 doesnt create any entries in the "recently used" lists

Aqua:
the "recently used" file lists behave as the normal file lists: When selecting a big file, it mostly takes very long.
The "slow selecting" happens mostly with svg files, but sometimes with others, and even with folders.

This should be addressed in current trunk, see
Bug #826027 “Preview calculated anyway in Open File dialog”
<https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/826027>

-> turn off 'File preview' in the dialog, and selecting a file is instant, and allows it to be opened without the delay (the time it takes to calculate the preview image). Loading the file itself of course doesn't speed up due to the change for bug #826027 (if it is large and has lots of objects, or makes heavy use of filter effects).

Not reproduced with current trunk builds (independent of which backend of GTK+ used) on Mac OS X 10.5.8 and OS X 10.7.4:
- if file preview is disabled in the file chooser dialog, no time is spent anymore to render the preview
- if file preview is enabled, the Quartz-based builds are not noticeably slower than the same revision compiled with GTK+/X11

Closing as 'Fix Committed' with milestone set to '0.49'.
