Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

I have a vexing problem with my password when using wireless connection. My modem shows I'm connected to the Internet, but I'm unable to connect to any sites. And I when I go to edit Wireless Connections I find my password replaced replaced by a homogeneously long string of characters like so: 7794fe4boefc896d...and one and on and on. If I replace the string of gibberish (some kind of code?) with my password, I fin my password has been instantly replaced by the gibberish when I re-check. I keep repeating this procedure - over and over - and eventually am able to access web sites. But I also have to reboot several times to manage this. What the blazes is going on???? Most frustrating......

I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 with the latest downloads...and this problem only cropped up after relocating my computer i.e disconnecting and reconnecting modem.

This is a known problem with NetworkManager 0.7.x and earlier...

The applet converts the key/passphrase input by the user to an internal representation. It's a poor user experience, and has been fixed in NM 0.8 ( included in Karmic ).

I'm marking this as WontFix.

If you still have troubles with connecting, please enter a new separate bug.

Changed in network-manager (Ubuntu):
status: New → Won't Fix

Thanks for the prompt response. Good to know this bug has been
fixed in Karmic. HOWEVER: Karmic is still three weeks away. How
do I fix this in the meantime????

The problem that's been fixed in Karmic is the representation of keys / passphrases in the applet. Now, when you use the connection editor, you see keys / passphrases as they were originally entered. No more gibberish. To get this fix, right now you need to run Karmic. There's a limit to what can be back-ported to older releases and this doesn't really fit the SRU criteria. So your choices are a) tryout Karmic Beta or b) wait for the final release.

If you're having separate connection problems then please enter a separate bug as this has already been marked WontFix.
