Bug Description
In Konsole, for instance, choose the "Fixed [Misc]" font from the Settings menu. You may have to do a "dpkg-reconfigure -plow fontconfig" and enable bitmapped fonts so that this font appears in the list. Using a UTF-8-enabled locale (my $LANG is "en_CA.UTF-8"), do a "man gcc", for example. You will see that many characters render as dotted squares. Look at the dashes at the end of lines for example.

Hi Simon,
Can you replicate the same problem using uxterm instead of konsole?
Thanks.
