Fixed [Misc] font doesn't render Unicode characters correctly

Bug Description

In Konsole, for instance, choose the "Fixed [Misc]" font from the Settings menu. You may have to do a "dpkg-reconfigure -plow fontconfig" and enable bitmapped fonts so that this font appears in the list. Using a UTF-8-enabled locale (my $LANG is "en_CA.UTF-8"), do a "man gcc", for example. You will see that many characters render as dotted squares. Look at the dashes at the end of lines for example.

Hi Simon,

Can you replicate the same problem using uxterm instead of konsole?

Thanks.

No, but uxterm doesn't seem to use Unicode even though my LANG is the same. For example, in the gcc manpage, quotes that are shown as squares in Konsole get transformed to plain ASCII. See for example the second line after DESCRIPTION: ‘‘overall options’’

Those are rendered as U+0060 and U+0027 respectively, as they
should be.

This looks to be a konsole bug.

Well in that case there should be two squares on either end of "overall options" in Konsole, but there is only one. Also, Konsole on Fedora Core doesn't have this bug so I doubt this is a Konsole bug, even a packaging one.

The fonts used by UXterm are defined in /etc/X11/app-defaults/UXTerm

It seems to be fixed in 7.10. Yay!
