Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:

apport-collect 442164

This will help us to find and resolve the problem. Bear in mind that you may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe repository. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability to "Change Non-Private" data as it will be adding information to your bug report. Thanks in advance!

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the appropriate application's "Help -> Report a Problem" menu or using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Neither the touchpad nor the sound is detected. It seems that the hardware is not detected. Both work in XP (this is a dual boot machine).

I'm also having this problem, but only the touchpad part.
The Synaptics touchpad on my Dell Latitude D530 is not detected anymore after the upgrade to 9.10 .
It worked perfectly in Jaunty.

No sign of synaptics in lspci, lshal or dmesg ...
tpconfig does detect the synaptics touchpad though ...

How can I help?

I fixed it but not exactly sure how...here's what I think I did.

I upgraded to 9.10 from 9.04 and just noticed that the "latest" kernel, 2.6.31-14-generic was not being used. I went into system> administration>synaptic package manager and checked grub-pc which installed Grub2 and uninstalled Grub. After I rebooted I found that the boot list now allowed me to select kernel 2.6.31 (this wasn't even a choice before). Everything seems to be cool now.

I hope this helps someone, sorry that I don't have a better technical explanation of what happened.

I had a lot of problems too because of that reason, of which most problems were solved after selecting the 'right' kernel.
The touchpad problems remains though.

However I realize I got the touchpad working with the 'wrong' kernel by doing the following:
echo options psmouse proto=exps > /etc/modprobe.d/psmouse.modprobe

(As described here: http://danilogurovich.wordpress.com/2009/10/17/ubuntu-karmic-koala-9-10-beta-buggy-touchpad-behavior/ )

Maybe that has something to do with it...
Will try undoing that change.

Ok, undoing the above "fix" by removing the /etc/modprobe.d/psmouse.modprobe file fixes this issue for me.
Pretty stupid after all... Just mindlessly applied copy-pasted the command and never really thought about what it did.
Sorry for the clutter guys!
