I also have this problem.
I upgraded from ubuntu 9.04. On a Samsung nc10 netbook.
And when i watching a move or playing a sound in vlc in lagging in a none regular way.
It do not matter which output device i chose.
It work greae in all the other musik/move players i have on this computer.

i can add in the gnome-volume-control under applications I find ALSA plug-in [vlc] and
all the time the sound lagging that program disappear in that list.
hope that can help.

the problem disapper when i kill the pulseaudio program.
and now i cant recreate the problem.

okej when i try to re-create the problem i had not enough patience, i appeared again when i have have on the computer a while or watch or listen a short amount of time(ca 2 min) whit VLC.
if i restart pulseaudio i only have ca 2 min more.
but if i start VLC whit the "vlc --aout pulse" that is the pluseaudio plugin to VLC. http://packages.debian.org/sv/sid/vlc-plugin-pulse
the problem never occur.
