Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-network

Network Settings only shows Wireless, Ethernet and Modem connection. I cannot add a new connection named ADSL using ppp0 interface.

I know this is possible under Fedora 6, through adsl-setup (it creates a new entry in Network Settings).
This is great because it's easier to switch from home to work network.

Thanks!

I'm ussing Ubuntu Dapper Beta (Flight7). All works great! It's a shame I cannot add my ADSL connection into Network settings.

Right now I've configured my adsl through pppoeconf (for configuration) and "pon dsl-provider" to bring up ppp0 interface.

Here's were appear my adsl configuration under Fedora Core 6 ... It would be great if this can be done under Ubuntu.

Tested again in Dapper 05/23 daily build.
Without this added to gnome-network (or network-admin from the command line), normal ADSL users can't set up internet access, even though Ethernet ADSL modems are perfectly supported under Ubuntu.
An ADSL connection needs to be added, that offers a name (login) and a password field.

This is gnome-network on Fedora ... here is what I mean by adding an ADSL connection.

Keep up the good job! Ubuntu rocks!

Thanks for your bug. That would probably be a good topic for a specification rather than a bug though

There is already some wiki page like https://wiki.ubuntu.com/EasyUsbAdsl on the topic. I'm not sure if we will have any plan on that for next week, that will be discuss during the summit next month but there is a lot to do so work for contributor is always welcome. If you have some good idea on the topic feel free to write them on the wiki, do mockup of a software to make adsl configuration easy, etc. You can also try to investigate if porting the tools from mandriva or redhat would be easy and let we know. Or start coding on that if you want. Just some random ideas on what work could be useful, feel free to wait other way than the Ubuntu team decide to work on that or that some other contributors step for it

Isn't that something that should/could be done upstream (gnome perhaps)? What's the point in having several distributions all program their own extension to network-manager?

In Ubuntu, the tool used is network-admin. However, there's no "About" page, so is it something done in-house, or is there an upstream somewhere?

we don't use network-manager. network-admin is shipped by gnome-system-tools, and right, that feature would be nice for it

closing that task, the gnome-system-tools one is enough

In most (European?) countries the first task after installing an operating system is to set the adsl connection up. Is it rational that this can only be done using help, command line and some network-protocols knowledge (e.g. what MTU is)?
