xfmedia doesn't do much of anything

Bug Description

Binary package hint: xubuntu-desktop

i have tried xfmedia from time to time and well it should not be included. It doesn't play radio streams at all and it only plays a second or two from cd's and then stops. I haven't tried any video's because I get too frustrated with it just trying to listen to music.

MP3s work fine for me, CDs on the other hand don't. It chews on the cd whist attempting to download the track names by the looks of things, all the time the interface is unresponsive and CDs never actually play. Movies seem to work fine though.

xfmedia is a joke... even xmms is better... not being able to handle music cd's properly is really bad (and should probley be filed as a separate bug). i'd like to see xfmedia get better, or removed in edgy eft for the sake of quality.

right, if xfmedia does not improve in edgy timeframe it will be replaced.

There are a few reasons why this was not a high priority issue for dapper:
1) to play 'real life' media most ubuntu users will have to install things from universe/multiverse anyway so each will pick it's favourite app +codecs.
2) media playing was not as important as some other aspects of xubuntu and we did not have the resources to improve its status
3) chosing another player (gxine was considered) meant more extra stuff in main.
But this will be fixed for edgy one way or another, since at least audio CD playing should be doable and expected by most people.

we plan to provide gxine instead of xfmedia for edgy.

xfmedia still has its warts, but since this bug was more about general dissatisfaction with it being the default player this bug can be closed now that gxine is the default player.
