Bug Description

Hibernate works, but suspend doesn't.
Happened earlier too, in Ubuntu 8.04, 8.10, 9.04.
I'm going to follow the steps in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspendHibernateResume and report here later.

ProblemType: KernelOops
Annotation: This occured during a previous suspend and prevented it from resuming properly.

Booting in recovery mode to root shell and running /etc/acpi/sleep.sh works as it should - resumed OK.

Now I'll try to follow https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend

I followed "resume-trace" procedure and I think it didn't work for me - I had no hash matches in dmesg and I didn't have to set the clock again after the procedure.

I feel I have to describe the symptoms. When I suspend the laptop, it looks just like it should - screen powers off, I hear the fan and HDD spin down and power led starts to flash. When I try to resume it (either with power button, or any other button), HDD and fan start to spin, but the screen backlight is off, and the keyboard is unresponsive (Caps Lock button have no effect on the corresponding light).

Once again, when I tried to accomplish the same "resume-trace" procedure from the recovery root shell, the system resumed successfully. Now I don't know what to do, since I do not use proprietary ATI drivers (have fresh default karmic beta here). Any suggestions?

Installed fglrx driver from repository, suspend works with it. No compiz though.

Hi Evgeny,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 441330

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I'm having the same issue on this laptop, the only differences are: 64bit system and newer version (today's Ubuntu Lucid). I'm confirming the description of symptoms - it's the same on my machine; i don't use fglrx.

I've tested also the mainline kernel (2.6.32.11) - but it doesn't work at all - it freezes right after starting (similarly to bug 546117)

This problem still exists on Lucid 10.04 with latest updates.
I tried disabling modeset, but this did not help.

When I stop gdm and execute /etc/acpi/sleep.sh the laptop suspends, but hangs after wakeup.

Hibernate does not seem to work either (hangs when X shows after wakeup).
