Bug Description

Binary package hint: xsplash

Between GRUB and the KDM I'm not getting any xsplash, just a couple of kernel looking errors (see attached image - bugs reported elsewhere on Launchpad).

This is on a completely vanilla Kubuntu Karmic AMD64 install. The only thing I've done is an apt-get update && apt-get install and reboot.

Mobo is an ASUS M3A78-T with an AMD Phenom II quad core cpu and 4 gig of ram.

After noticing the Installed:(none) line I did an apt-get install xsplash and rebooted. No change, although I now have:

Note: May be related to / a dupe of bug# 440749. Wasn't sure given all their hardware seems different, so I reported this separately.

Shutdown doesn't show xsplash, it shows usplash. Also, do you get into X at all or are you stuck looking at a terminal? This is either a dupe of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xsplash/+bug/440749 or https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xsplash/+bug/441209 .

Long story short, i get grub, then I get kernel messages, then I get the KDE loading splash.

I just realized you wrote KDM instead of GDM. Kubuntu doesn't have xsplash implemented. It looks like they'll just try starting ksplashx earlier. As such, I think this is invalid.

Reading those links it seems that this should already be implemented as both feature freeze and artwork freeze have passed and yet there is still nothing visual showing in the boot process.

Maybe this should be moved from xsplash to ksplashx instead.

As Daniel said, xsplash is implemented in Ubuntu (as opposed to Kubuntu). If Kubuntu wants to use it, of course they're more than welcome to it but you should talk to them directly.
