Ubuntu 9.10 uses kernel 2.6.31, but you are running 2.6.28. Can you please try to update to the standard Karmic kernel and see if that helps?

First, alsa-utils restart does NOT magically make sound work. It (re)stores volume settings. For Lucid, I will add a big fat warning so people who manually invoke it can see that it has nothing to do with anything other than (re)storing volume settings.

affects: alsa-utils (Ubuntu) → linux (Ubuntu)
