Bug Description

When booting the latest daily livecd my computer freezes during X's startup. The monitor briefly cycles off and then cycles on again but is blank. No further startup occurs. When I log into the machine I can see that X is using 100% of the CPU and no other parts of the desktop seem to have started.

Dual Screen GeForce 9500.

This machine has worked ok in all previous releases of Ubuntu.

Also, I had to kill some program called xkbcomp because apport was stuck collecting information. You may notice some errors in the collected files related to that. I was running ubuntu-bug via a remove SSH connection because I could not get X to work.

I have a GeForce 8800GT and I think I have the same problem. The screen cycles and then my monitor says there's no input. I had similar (the same maybe?) issues with the Alpha 6 iso and the Sep 25 nightly iso. I used the ubuntu USB boot disk creator and ran from there.

I retested with the Oct 9 Daily LiveCD and there has been no improvement. The same symptoms occur.

Thank you for reporting this issue about xserver-xorg-video-nv. Starting
with Lucid, Ubuntu is transitioning to using the -nouveau video driver
by default instead of -nv. The reason for this change is because
upstream development for the -nv driver has been quite slow. We are
quite pleased with the upstream development speed for -nouveau, and hope
this will translate into swifter bug fixes as well.

Because of this, I'm closing this bug report at this time. I'm marking
it wontfix because what you describe is probably a valid issue, but we
do not have further plans to work on it in Ubuntu. If you would still like
to see this issue investigated, I would encourage you to file it
upstream at http://bugs.freedesktop.org/.
